I like that idea, I think it was what we were thinking with the challenge, but it kind of fizzled...Lets all use Phil's Dr appt as a goal. Phil, you set the bites, I'll follow!

exactly. i think if when we do the challenges we're all at different spots in the diet, if we all commit to starting at the same time then we will go thru the 3 day rough patch together and watever else. It may be helpful, just trying to attack this in a slightly different way. We have a lovely support system going here, we can really help each other out!

I am soooo in!!

I'll make a page dedicated to it!

Tea ur right we can just have it all in point form

Personally I don't usually have breakfast anyway so then for me the 8x2 bites work better but what did you all want??

Yesterday was a good day for me! I did the walking with spurts of jogging!!

However today I had a little rough patch for lunch ... But I will just do the 8 bites for dinner as if nothing happened and also do my walking!

So when did u all want to start???

i kinda already started!!! figured no time like the present. dude whatever happens just post up what you ate/worked off during the day. Easy and simple and gives u a reason to come online, get some support, see that people are with u and that this is working out well! im going to go 8x2 for the first 3 days with vigorous exercise and see if that helps me get out of that initial rough patch and into good patterns. Then if i feel like i can handle it without losing control of my appetite ill kick it down to 5x2 and go from there. Also, post up ur weight whenever u weigh in- doesnt matter if u want to do it everyday, or every week- who cares, no judgment... just progress and support. 3 weeks is not long at all!! a short term goal is really a healthy way to approach this i think, rather than say im going to be on this till the weight is off. Do it for 3 weeks, then see where u stand, if u want to keep going then set another 3 week goal, if not- take a weekend to celebrate ur progress, go off the diet eat in moderation whatever u want to and be happy. Then come right back after those 2 days and kick off some more weight.

OK so I stuck to the 8 x 2 = 16 bites today!!!

BUT i didn't have them as 2x8 i had them spasmodically... good/bad???

ALSO i felt like i had WAYYYYYYYYY to much food!

2 x bites Hummus with bread
2 x bites spinach & chicken soup
2 x bites meat balls
5 x bites KFC chicken fillet burger
4 x bites (mouthfulls??) fries [approx can't remember exactly]
1 x bite chocolate

NOW there is my 16 bites but there is NO WAY IN HEC that is equal to 2 snicker bars! its just too much in my opinion??!

I think my bites (mouthfuls) were wayy to big, to be honest i don't feel like i've accomplished anything today!

Your thoughts and opinions would be appreciated... the reason im not sticking to just bared food, is that simply i can't... i need variety!

Maybe tomorrow i should make my bites smaller and not wait till 8pm to have them all at once... but today i had a reason... I was soooo busy ... that being said i wasn't even hungry that much today at all... at least i don't think i was.. :p

yea u def feel all stuffed cuz u ate it all at once, and perhaps the bites were large too. That's kinda why i use a teaspoon as a measure if im going to eat hummus ill put 1 "bite" worth on a spoon and lick it off so it takes me a while and u get to enjoy the flavor. Try to break it up, ull feel less starved at dinner time if u do, and ull also give urself time to digest it before re-fueling. I always feel really stuffed after going a day without eating and then having a 5 bite dinner even, its all the gas in ur digestive system from having nothing and then suddenly having this plug of food sitting on top of it.
I had 7x2 yesterday and i did feel like i was on a diet and that i was portion controlling ALOT more than i would have normally if i wasnt paying attention. Also when u break up the meals into 2 ur metabolism stays high, if u lump them into one 16 bite feast then ur going a whole day without food- ur body freaks out and slows ur metabolism, and then u eat a feast right before going to bed- and u dont need much in calories to sleep, so u may actually store up fat and not see much weight loss from that strategy at all.
The time of day that u eat is super important. If u took that 16 bite feast and ate it in the middle of the day and skipped dinner all together u would have felt like u did plenty as far as diet is concerned, u up the metabolism during the day when ur active and likely to burn it off, and u would have used the night to digest away the food. Eating twice helps to deal with the nighttime binges too. Going to bed a little hungry is actually one of the best strategies when it comes to weight loss on any diet using any method. Good point Tea! Smile

I'll try the teaspoon method tomorrow Smile just out of curiosity how do u eat something like a burger with a teaspoon lol or do u just count bites??

At least I stuck to the number of bites but I don't feel so good now, I feel sorta bloated but it's gas build up I imagin as u said...

Tomorrow will be interesting... Going to a movie with a friend... No doubt lunch will ensue :/

with a burger i would just try to resist the urge to shove it in ur mouth and see how much u can push in there. haha. Bites are such a weak unit of measure it gets tough sometimes. Maybe it would be good to look at the burger first and try to figure out how much of the burger 5 legitimate bites would be (1/2 the burger or whatever) and then eat ur 5 bite with that budget in mind. I dont eat burgers-- but i do that with pizza. I kinda look at it and then go well one bite looks like it should be about this big, and so if i cut the slice in half, this seems like its 5-7 human-sized bites.. and then ill try to make it work. I think it works best when u take a split second to think before eating, i know when im hungry i just kinda inhale whats in front of me, but if u take a moment u can really stop destruction, or even better yet- u can take those 5 bites that u put in front of u and nibble on them for a while making 2-3 baby bites out of each one, making sure to drink lots of water in between to slow down the process to try to keep up with ur normally eating friend.

The burger I had was actually quite small! It looked smaller than 2 pieces of toast as a sandwhich so I had the entire thing in 5 bites... Not to mention the fact that I was quite peeved with KFC for making such small burgers with stale fries and still charging $11 for it... Not sure how big serving sizes are in the US (I've heard they are much larger than in Australia) but it was kind of annoying to see... Specially when I brought a meal each for my family lol my brother (eats like a horse and is stick thin at 15 grrr!) was also not impressed hehe ... Anyway besides the point lol ok so estimate BEFORE divining into it... Got it Smile thanks!

Portion sizes in the US are WAY TOO HUGE!!! That's why there's so many of us from America on the 5bite, we eat too much at once! Laughing

Phil, it was kinda funny i was talking to my dad the other day and he was talking about how his weight is the same all the time and has never been more than 2-3lbs give or take in the last 30 years. I was saying that the holidays are coming up and i have to drop a few lbs now so that i dont have to worry about it when the good food comes around, and he was like- the important thing is to maintain throughout ur life and not go up and down based on whats going on around you. Seems pretty obvious, but i guess what he meant was that those of us that have varing weights are eating more with our eyes and less with our stomachs. My dad eats everything, granted he doesnt eat it all the time, but if there is cheesecake 50% of the time he'll be down for a slice, or if i make cookies he'll munch on 2-3 but u never see him attacking the kitchen like i tend to do, and i think thats what makes people that have steady weights maintain that for their lives. It really is all about habits, but i think more than anything else is that we just THINK about food all the time! Either cuz we ate too little or ate too much or now feel guilty about it etc etc. Those people just dont think about it, and thats really the healthy style. I've kinda been thinking about that and i've never been more motivated to get in shape as quick as possible and learn to eat properly for life. I dont want to be going up and down and feel my pants are too tight and know that its for no other reason other than "well there was alot of cake and cookies and cheese and bread involved--- damn it back on a diet" How on earth is one supposed to lose weight and maintain it if they dont do a 180 degree change in how they handle this? Its a combination of what u eat and how u eat and how often u eat. There is no such thing as "eat however much u want of this healthy stuff" or "eat just a bite of cake" Eat ur slice of cake, enjoy it, but then understand that the next meal should be a little lighter, or else, that was ur snack time so ur done now with the munching. Just kinda interesting to think about when i saw that u had a fun time with friends. Its great that u enjoyed ur time and im so happy that u feel in control for the next day, and THATS THE POINT. There are going to be friend times and parties and whatever but its not like this is ur last meal. Enjoy ur time, but then maybe lunch was a little heavy- no pressure for having to have dinner if ur not hungry, just cuz its that time of day.

Good job for getting back on program Phil. Im super proud of u.

Tea! i read your post and and so thankful you said that!

It's motivational and very realistic!

Your 10000% right in EVERYTHING you said!

I need to learn how to think logically and concentrate on the moment! at the moment and previously, it obviously wasn't happening!

That being said.. I hit another bump in the road last nite BUT i picked myself up brushed myself off and have kept on walking today!

I really really REALLY want this... i don't want to be fat for the rest of my life! more importantly i have a huge chance of getting MANY diseases related to being overweight, this chance is only increased due to the severe hereditary aspect which im linked to! (bad family genes :p )

I want to be healthy and want to be able to were NORMAL sized clothes! i just turned 22! i NEED (not just want!) to be able to experiecne life to the fullest, and be confident! right now i have none of that! how the hec am I meant to meet a girl if I can't be confident in myself!?

I can't seem to say no to food... and if I do manage to stick to the plan for more than a day and I don't see results quick enough, im very easily disheartened and i know this is extremly wrong!

I have 3 weeks to go before I have to face my doctor (thats just my GP I also have a specialist appointment...)I have previously lost a good amount of weight but have put on about 20lbs :/ I would love to lose this in the next 3 weeks??! not sure if its possible tho?? what do u think?

I need to focus on getting healthy and being able to eat mindfully... it can all turn with in a split second!

Today I had

8 x cheese and crackers (vita wheat things)
4 bites green beans
2 bites rice and tomato mix
2 bites (normal mouth fulls not over top) macadamia nuts

Inthink to day was ok... But I think I might start cutting back a little (1 or 2 bites less and take it from there) it still feels like too much food and I haven't seen any weight loss...

I'm constantly bloated as well... :s

Today was ok... But could have Bern beta... I snacked on a few nuts today :p

Lunch- 6 bites pastrami and olive sandwich
Dinner- 9-10 bites roast dinner
Snack - had a handfull of mixed nuts at work today... And a sip of creaming soda from my cousin :p

I have been losing, but everyone is saying I look slimer... I'm a little concerned that the number on the scales is the same but I'm not sure if they are even right... I'm wondering if I should just track my weightless through tape measure??? Any thoughts??

Re: Phil's Daily Journal... it could get ugly :p

Post  Phil on Wed Oct 06, 2010 1:11 am

i weighed in this morning and had gained 4 pounds!! im UPSET! BUT that being said... i did have a naughty nite last nite...

I haven't checked for a few days, had finals! - not looking forward to results :/ and wasn't anywhere near a computer!

On another note im switching to the 2 x 5 bites as of today (instead of the curret 8 x 2)... Hopefully it will start to happen for me! tho i am positive about it... It's just that nites are sooooo hard!

I'll start checking regulary again today... and i'm hoping to stick to bars for at least 3 or so days! (if i can handle it maybe more)

My proposed plan for today (its 11am now tho)

Breakfast : Nothing
Lunch : macadamia bar (212 kcal)
Dinner: Boost Chocolate Bar (305 kcal)
Snack: WATER Very Happy

Hoping to have macadamia bars for the next few days i love them soooooooo much! (and they are only $1.5 or something) but seriously doubting myself after my ugly track record!!!

That being said... i'm still positive... just need to constantly be kicked up the butt!

Also I was thinking about it this morning... THIS diet is really awesome... i mean u can go on it at anytime at any given weight and still lose... WHEN i get to my goal weight, it should be easy to maintain i hope... but I think im jumping to far ahead of myself :p

Also im not gonna weigh in everyday... I just have to try really hard, otherwise if im not down to where i want to be on a certain day i get upest and give up :p ... so weigh in once a week only!

i don't know where this motivation came from just now... but i REALLY hope it lasts!

Ummmmmmmmmmmm Ye... GO TEAM Very Happy

ALSO WHY IS NO ONE USING THE CHAT!?? lol i don't think we have enough people on here at the same time Razz

STUPID TIMEZONES >Neutral hehe

Re: Phil's Daily Journal... it could get ugly :p

Post  teaismyhappyplace on Wed Oct 06, 2010 3:16 am

Phil i am so so glad that u were motivated!!!! U have so much to gain, ur so young and u have so much of life ahead of u, mountains to climb and adventures to have, for crying out loud u live in AUSTRALIA (a place that i would LOVE to visit if i had the funds- hopefully in a future dream i will)!!

Also, I know u said u have been eating nuts (macademia are the yummiest, but also the highest in fat content!!! be careful with those, almonds are better and will reduce ur cholesterol Shocked ). Now i love love love nuts, BUT i notice that when i eat them- i dont lose ANYTHING. i have no idea why, maybe its the oils/types of fat, maybe its supporting muscle (which is good for u- but not for the scale). I also eat them when im in a guilty evening kitchen attack as well, and i know for a FACT that night time eating= weight GAIN. Most of ur calories are eaten at night, and then u go to bed u encourage the body to add in fat rather than eat during the day and support muscle and then use the night to use its reserves.

I know its a HUGE conscious effort, and i dont know what ur daily life is like, but what if u were to eat ur 5 bite lunch and then do something physical, say go for a walk, gardening, helping around the house, do some chores, clean, whatever u want that gets u to break into a sweat, then if u feel hungry again before evening gulp down LOTS of water (ur more than likely thirsty!).

I find also that drinking oceans of water helps with weight loss and appetite control. Ever since i added in morning cardio this diet has been OODLES easier to stick to. I work out around 9am, shower, get dressed and make some Yerba Mate, and then i am not hungry again till atleast 2-3 pm.... its really great. Then ill have a little lunch of watever, and make some more tea if i want, which usually holds me over till dinner- which is followed by another round on the treadmill and ENDS THE EVENING BINGE CYCLE. I cant even tell u some nights i leave the table and im like k 5 bites all done, and then an hour later im circling the pantry in a mental battle of to eat or not to eat (i lose every time). BUT when i throw in an evening jog im so happy afterwards and i just worked off so much that im like hell no im not eating anything, just shower and maybe watch some TV and then sleep time. Honestly that's like the only thing that has been helping when i feel like i may do a bad thing. Sometimes in the morning if im really hungry within 5 minutes of running the hunger is out the door and i dont think about it again till after 2pm. Give it a shot, it sounds like it would be impossible since ur eating so little and when 3jaysmom was talking about i was like omg shes wonderwoman i cant do that.... but no, she had the exact right idea, it helps burn the candle from both ends, weight comes off faster, ur in a better mood, and ur appetite is shut up a little more just as long as u make sure to get in protein and drink lots of water.

im so sorry i wrote all up on ur wall.. u know my rants are all over the place. Rolling Eyes

i don't knoww how to feel...

I thought i failed yesterday, today and the day before that! but this morning my mom tells me that I look like i've lost weight... Shocked

The scales sure as hec don't reflect it...

Once again im doubting my ability to be perfect at this diet... even though i know that i can make my goal 5-8 x 2 bites a day...

although they might have gone down a little bit cause i haven't weighed in for a couple days... but i won't till next week! cause that what i want to do...

Something is def. going on with my body... its so spasmodic and does what it wants haha

anyway... im still pretty happy i got a comment... AND FROM MY MOM! that means something cause she is very honest I love you

as soon as my mom says that it looks like i lost weight when i havent told her i was dieting... im on cloud 9. Moms are the best. Whether u agree or not, maybe some weight came off ur face or something, like a place thats really noticable, u never know. Just use that as a motivator, its working, keep it up!!!

There is a reality TV show called Thintervention. There is one episode up on hulu.com (dont know if u get that in australia), but it gives really good tips about diet and exercise and all sorts of stuff. I kinda ran into it the other day and i really felt motivated after that. If u have 40 minutes to burn try to watch it, its fun!
